I Am Enough

I am enough (small file)

I’m embarrassed to say that when I hear the word enough, the first thoughts I think are most often negative. My mind is auto-programmed to all my natural limitations and those set for me by others and the world we live in. You know, like I can’t speak in front of people because my speech isn’t polished enough. Or I won’t get that job because I’m not smart enough or I don’t have enough formal education. Or even at the end of the pay period when there’s not enough money left in the checking account ($0.84 to be exact, ahem) so you have to run to the bank to deposit cash or make a transfer from savings.  Or I don’t have enough time or enough resources or enough scriptures memorized to do what God is calling me to do.

Yes, my mind relates the word enough to deficiency and limitation. That’s why it’s so important to replace my carnal thinking with spiritual truths.

“For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace”

(Romans 8:6).

God’s Word sets us free from limitation.

I Am Enough - Jesus bridges the gap

Jesus bridges the gap between my inadequacy and God’s sufficiency. 

Between my imperfection and God’s perfection. Between my lack and God’s abundance.

Because of Jesus, I AM ENOUGH.

I don’t have to have perfect vocabulary or a Master’s degree in communication before He can use my mouth to speak.

“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim His name; make known among the nations what He has done.” (Psalm 105:1)
“My lips shall utter praise,
For You teach me Your statutes.
My tongue shall speak of Your word,
For all Your commandments are righteousness.”
(Psalm 119:172)
“My heart is overflowing with a good theme;
I recite my composition concerning the King’
My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.”
(Psalm 45:1)

When I feel weak and don’t have enough words or enough strength to pray, God says the Spirit Himself helps me.

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” (Romans 8:26)

When we walk as wise women and understand the importance of using wisdom in our finances and being a good steward over our resources (seek first), no matter what our check books says, God says He will provide.

“Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothes you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:30-33)

When the wind picks up and the waves grow large and my heart is unsettled, I can rest in the truth that God is a very present help in my time of trouble.

God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And the mountains be carried in to the midst of the sea;
Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling.
(Psalm 46:1-3)

No matter what today brings, God is enough.

No matter how I feel, because of Jesus, I AM ENOUGH.

When Loving Is Hard and You Hardly Feel Loved on Valentine’s Day (or Any Other Day), Remember This

We have forgotten anniversaries, fought on Valentine’s Day, skipped over birthdays, and much more we are not proud of. I mean, if you’ve been married almost twenty-three years and have never slammed a door, gritted your teeth in frustration, or slept on the couch, pretty please with sugar on top tell us your secret.

Over the course of these twenty-three years, our love has grown but growth doesn’t come without some discomfort and pain. We don’t always feel love and we don’t always show love but we have decided to choose love.

Love is sometimes messy and hard and uncomfortable.

Love doesn’t always look like the commercials on TV or the movies on the Hallmark Channel.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 says,
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

1 Corinthians 13

Love is decided daily, sometimes moment by moment.  Love is a choice to not give up, sometimes give in, and always give away.

True love is true. It’s honest and dependable and messy.

It isn’t found in a heart-shaped box. It isn’t commercialized and showy or only one day a year. It gives more than flowers and balloons; it gives of itself.

We’ve found that we can love extravagantly in our words and actions and yes, even our inexpensive but thoughtful gifts (or notes on the bathroom mirror). We can love each other well every day.

Do we always succeed? N to the NO. We are two imperfect people trying to get it right who often get it terribly wrong.

Forgiveness and grace are some of the most extravagant gifts we can offer each other as husband and wife. Without them, there would be no “us.”

But in all of our shortcomings we have discovered One who has never and will never let us down.

We have found a love that never ends. A love that always forgives. A love that loves without conditions. A love that never waivers. A perfect love matched by no other. A love that enables and empowers us to love each other and others well.

A love that reaches down into our darkest, messiest, ugliest moments and offers hope.

Maybe you feel unloved today. Maybe you have had more dark and messy and ugly days than you’ve had good days. Maybe you feel alone or hurt or angry or betrayed. Maybe you can’t see hope for the future and aren’t even sure if you want to.

First, can I say I’m so sorry? I don’t know your story. I don’t know the things that have happened to you or the things that have been done to you. But please, don’t stop reading here. I have good news for you. Really, really good news.

Your story isn’t over yet.

There’s another chapter waiting to begin.

It’s time to turn the page.

God loves you. He loves you more than anyone on earth ever could. He loves you no matter what you’ve done in the past or what you did today. He loves you no matter your social status, your education level, the number of times you’ve messed up, or what others think about you. I could go on and on. There is nothing that can keep God from loving you. He IS love. And He wants to lavish His love on you today. Forever and ever and without condition.

All you have to do is say yes. Receive His love. Surrender your heart and life to the One who will never leave you and never stop loving you.

Jesus has made a way for us. He paid the ultimate sacrifice on the cross for our sins so that we can walk in relationship with our heavenly Father. He has secured eternity for us if we choose to accept it.

Can we pray together today?

Dear heavenly Father,
Thank you for loving us. Help us to understand Your love and teach us to love others. We surrender our heart and our life to You today, right now. We’ve looked for love in every wrong place. We’ve tried everything and nothing satisfies or fulfills us. Fill us today with Your love and satisfy us like only You can. Thank you for Jesus and all that He has done for us. We believe in our heart and confess with our mouth right now that He is Lord. We also confess our sins to You now and believe that we have forgiveness because of Jesus. Thank you for mercy and grace and love. Thank you for saving us and never leaving us. We love You. In Jesus’ name we pray – Amen.

“Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” Ephesians 2:4-5

“Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.” Psalms 136:26

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” Ephesians 3:16-21

Be Discerning & Wise – Recognize the Enemy

psalm 63-4

My heart has been heavy today and my spirit grieved. The times upon us are evil and we cannot take lightly all that is happening in the physical and the spiritual realms. We cannot walk in fear but we must take seriously the war against good and evil that is intensifying. As I was cooking dinner tonight I felt impressed to grab my notebook and write. The words that poured out are a warning to us as the body of Christ.

As the enemy weaves skillfully into place and prepares to attack, one of his strategies will be to have us take ourselves out or at least weaken the ranks. This is nothing new and nothing he has not tried before but his efforts are intensifying. There is a multitude of ways he will attempt this, including:

  • Stirring up dissension and strife and causing us to fight among ourselves
  • Using friendly fire to eliminate key and effective leaders
  • Distractions – anything that will keep us from the purposes of God (loving each other as ourselves, forgiving, showing mercy and compassion, offering grace, etc)
  • Causing us to “major on the minors” or things that have no eternal significance
  • Raising up a critical and judgmental spirit
  • Stirring up hate
  • Destroying families, breaking up family units
  • Disunity in the church
  • Discouragement, disappointment, and hopelessness – anything to keep us from walking in the authority and power of Jesus, anything to keep us from praising God
  • Compromise

We must be discerning and wise. Rise up, army of God! Recognize the schemes and wiles of the enemy! He is sneaky and cunning. Be alert! Stand firm! He is a defeated foe and his ultimate fate has already been decided but he can wreak much havoc and cause much harm if we allow him to. We must open our spiritual eyes, hear with spiritual ears, and let the sound of praise go before us. Gather your families! Link arms with your brothers and sisters in Christ! Recognize the enemy for who he is. Arm yourselves with the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Take time to be renewed, refreshed, and strengthened in His presence. No matter what the enemy throws at us or uses against us, our God is greater!

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. ~ 1 Peter 5:8

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. ~ Ephesians 6:12

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. ~ John 13:34-35

For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. ~ Psalm 135:5

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. ~ 1 John 4:4

Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. For the Lord Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth. ~ Psalm 47:1-2
